Origin

The Meta AM debuted in 2013 as Commencal's answer to aggressive all-mountain riding out of Andorra. Over six generations it grew into the Meta V5 by 2023, moving from a classic single-pivot layout to the VCS (Virtual Contact System) dual-link design. Throughout every version Commencal kept the frame in alloy — a deliberate choice driven by ethics (concerns about carbon manufacturing conditions) and value.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Outstanding value: race-spec alloy frame at a price point that undercuts most carbon rivals
  • VCS suspension is lively and engaging — rewards active riders with good pop and traction
  • Excellent climbing efficiency for an enduro bike; flip-chip geometry adjustability a bonus
Weaknesses
  • Alloy weight penalty vs carbon — ~15.8 kg is heavier than top carbon competitors
  • Limited main-triangle space makes fitting a full-size water bottle difficult (Meta V5)
  • Demanding to ride at pace on rough terrain — rewards experienced riders more than beginners
