Origin

The R3 debuted in 2009 as the accessible sibling to the legendary R5. Where the R5 is a gram-obsessed climber's machine, the R3 was engineered as a do-everything carbon road bike — comfortable enough for long days in the saddle, stiff enough to sprint. Cervelo's own pros raced it to Paris-Roubaix victories and Tour de France mountain stage wins, demonstrating its versatility.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Excellent all-round stiffness-to-weight ratio — lively under power, absorbs road buzz through seatstays
  • Comfortable geometry that still supports aggressive race positioning without being too upright
  • Proven race pedigree — Paris-Roubaix victories validate structural durability on worst-case roads
Weaknesses
  • Noticeably heavier than the R5 — climbers will feel the difference on steep gradients
  • Tire clearance capped at 28c limits versatility compared to modern endurance bikes with 32–35 mm clearance
  • Premium price places it squarely in flagship competition where newer rivals offer more compliance tech
