Origin
Xiaomi created the Essential to hit a sub-€300 price point and comply with stricter European 20 km/h speed regulations such as Germany's. It reuses the proven M365/1S chassis but pairs it with a much smaller 183.6 Wh battery and software speed limits to cut cost and weight. Launched in 2020, it became Xiaomi's lightest, most beginner-friendly scooter before being phased out by 2023 in favour of newer numbered models.

The verdict
+Strengths
- Very light at 12 kg — easiest Xiaomi to carry up stairs and onto public transport
- 3-second fold to ~49 cm height makes it genuinely portable and easy to store
- Dual braking (front E-ABS regenerative + rear mechanical disc) gives a short ~6 m stopping distance
- 8.5" pneumatic tires absorb small bumps far better than the solid tires on cheap rivals
- Affordable entry price (~€300) with proven Xiaomi build quality and Mi Home app support
−Weaknesses
- Tiny 183.6 Wh battery — realistic range is only ~15-20 km, too short for longer commutes
- No suspension at all; rigid frame makes cobblestones and rough pavement uncomfortable
- Weak 250 W motor struggles on hills above ~10° incline and with heavier riders
- 20 km/h top speed feels slow and is hard-limited; unlocking via firmware drains the small battery fast
- No integrated display — only a basic LED light, so speed/battery detail needs the phone app
