Origin

The 'EVO' moniker historically meant slightly beefed-up Specialized bikes. However, the current Stumpjumper EVO is practically an entirely different category than the standard Stumpjumper. With 160/150mm of travel and highly adjustable geometry, it rivals the Enduro model in capability but retains the playful nature of a trail bike. Gen 1 (2018-2020): Introduced as an extreme, ultra-slack variant of the Stumpjumper. Available only in aluminum initially. Gen 2 (2021-present): Massive redesign. 6 distinct geometry settings via headset cups and chainstay chips. Carbon frames added. SWAT door increased in size.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Extremely adjustable geometry (6 settings) lets one bike serve mellow trail and bike-park duty.
  • Incredibly planted and fast in rough, steep terrain while staying playful for a 160/150 mm bike.
  • Integrated SWAT down-tube storage swallows tube, tools and a soft flask without a pack.
  • Size-based S1-S6 fit system lets riders pick reach independent of leg length.
  • Strong stock spec value: 200 mm Code brakes, GX AXS wireless and FOX 36 GRIP2 even mid-range.
Weaknesses
  • Very low BB in slack/low settings causes pedal strikes on technical climbs; reviewers wanted 165 mm cranks instead of 170 mm.
  • Horst-link rear end doesn't pedal as efficiently as VPP/DW-Link rivals; can feel active under power.
  • Stock Butcher/Eliminator tyres lose cornering grip on hardpack and the rear is limiting on steep terrain.
  • Six adjustment settings overwhelm some owners; finding the right config takes experimentation.
  • Premium-priced builds (carbon Pro/S-Works) feel under-specced for the money per BikeRadar.
