Lever feel is 'long-throw and progressive' — riders coming from Shimano Servo-Wave will find it less digital, takes adjustment
Performance pads (stock) fade faster than Shimano resin pads on long descents — swap to Endurance for any serious gravity use
Calliper body is composite — some riders psychologically prefer machined aluminium (no actual performance penalty)
Carbotecture SL can show 'whitening' or surface scuffs from rock strikes — cosmetic only but visible
Lever clamp is proprietary single-bolt — needs Magura Shiftmix adapter to integrate with Shimano/SRAM shifters and dropper levers (€15-20 extra)
Hose shortening requires Magura's specific olive+pin kit — generic compression fittings don't fit

01MT5 and MT7 share the IDENTICAL calliper body, pistons, and pads — the only mechanical difference is the lever (HC blade on MT5 vs HC3 4-finger on MT7) and stock pad compound (Performance on MT5 vs Race on MT7). Upgrading an MT5 with the HC3 lever and Race pads gets you ~95% of an MT7 at roughly half the price.
02Magura is one of three OEM-volume brake brands using mineral oil instead of DOT (the others being Shimano and Tektro/TRP). Royal Blood is colourless mineral oil — distinct from Shimano's red mineral oil and Tektro's clear mineral oil. Cross-mixing is technically possible in emergencies but voids warranty and changes viscosity feel.
03The MT5 calliper body is moulded composite (Carbotecture SL), not machined aluminium. This is genuinely unusual in the high-performance brake market and a key reason for the price advantage — moulding is far cheaper than CNC machining of complex shapes. Stiffness is achieved through geometry rather than material modulus.
04MT5 is the OEM brake on a huge proportion of Cube Stereo and Cube Reaction e-MTBs from 2018 onward — Cube buys directly from Magura under a long-term Germany-to-Germany supplier contract. This makes MT5 spare-part availability excellent in Northern Europe.
05Vali Höll and Loic Bruni race on MT7 (the race version of the same calliper) — meaning MT5 owners ride essentially the same stopping hardware as multiple DH World Champions, just with a different lever and pad compound.
06Pinkbike's long-term review (2019) ran MT5 with HC3 lever upgrade and called it 'the brake to buy if you don't want to spend Code RSC money but want better-than-XT performance'.
07MT5 was specced on the original Canyon Spectral 7 and Cube Stereo 140 entry trims for 5+ consecutive model years — making it possibly the highest-volume 4-piston brake in the European MTB market.
08The HC3 lever upgrade is widely considered one of the best price-to-performance upgrades in MTB. The bite-point dial gives you 7 settings between 'rock-hard digital on/off' and 'soft progressive modulation' — fundamentally changes the brake's character for ~€69.
09The Magura factory tour shows that each MT5 calliper is bench-tested before leaving the factory — every brake is bled, pressurised, lever-stroked 50+ times, and inspected for leak before packaging. This is unusual at this price point.
