Origin

The Esprit is Gazelle's entry into the everyday Dutch city bike market — designed for riders who want Gazelle build quality and Dutch practicality at the lowest accessible price point. First appearing in 2014, it is widely used as a school bike and daily commuter in the Netherlands, with the sealed Shimano Nexus hub and roller brakes chosen specifically for years of use without service.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Roller brakes and Nexus IGH require essentially zero maintenance — ideal for low-attention urban users
  • Hub dynamo provides free, always-on lighting without batteries or recharging
  • Low price for a genuine Gazelle with Dutch quality construction and a 10-year frame warranty
Weaknesses
  • Rigid steel fork offers no vibration damping on cobbles and rough pavement
  • Nexus 3-speed variant (lower trims) gives very limited gear range for hilly terrain
  • CST Eternity tires have more rolling resistance than premium options like Schwalbe Marathon
