GazelleChamonix S8
city
01
Origin
The Chamonix occupies Gazelle's "active city" segment — faster and sportier than the Orange, but without an electric motor. Named after the famous Alpine resort, it pairs Gates CDN belt drive (carbon-toothed, oil-free) with the Shimano Alfine 8-speed hub for silky gear shifts in dress clothes without ever touching grease. Hydraulic disc brakes and a suspension fork complete the spec at under 19 kg.

The verdict
+Strengths
- Gates CDN + Alfine 8: the quietest, cleanest drivetrain available on a non-electric city bike
- Hydraulic disc brakes give precise, all-weather stopping power rarely seen on city bikes in this weight class
- 19 kg with full fenders, rack, and dynamo lights is genuinely impressive — comparable to basic e-bikes stripped of accessories
−Weaknesses
- Alfine 8 shifting feels notchy compared to the stepless Enviolo CVT on higher Gazelle models
- No motor means it is less competitive on hilly Baltic or Scandinavian terrain versus e-bike alternatives
- Gates belt requires compatible Alfine-specific sprocket and tensioner — more expensive to service than a chain
