Origin

Launched in 2017, the Vektron answered a gap that folding-bike purists had long argued over: could a folder get heavy enough motor assist to be genuinely useful on hilly cities without becoming too heavy to haul on public transit? Tern's answer was a Bosch Performance Drive Unit in a proven 20-inch folding chassis, delivering a bike that folds in 10 seconds, fits under most office desks, and covers 100 km on a charge.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Bosch Performance motor gives genuine hill-climbing assist uncommon in a 20-inch folder
  • Ten-second fold and compact dimensions make it truly multimodal
  • Magura hydraulic disc brakes provide confident stopping at 22 kg even with rack load
Weaknesses
  • 22 kg is noticeably heavier than non-motorised folding bikes when carrying it up stairs
  • 400 Wh battery is on the smaller side — range drops quickly in Turbo mode
  • Premium pricing compared to non-electric folding bikes at similar portability
