Origin

The Turbo Vado is Specialized's flagship full-power urban e-bike, in production since 2018 and refined through multiple generations. Built around an aluminum E5 mixte-style frame with both standard and step-through (low-entry) options, the Vado targets commuters, errand-runners, and tour-curious riders who want a bike they can pedal in jeans and arrive at work without sweat. The current generation uses the in-house Specialized 2.x motor platform (90 Nm on the 5.0, 70 Nm on the 4.0, 50 Nm on the 3.0), a 710 Wh internal downtube battery, and full EQ equipment — Supernova integrated lights, MIK-HD-compatible rear rack, full-coverage fenders, kickstand, and chain guard. A separate Turbo Vado S model is offered as a 45 km/h S-pedelec in Germany and other EU markets where the class is legal. The Vado SL is a distinct, lighter platform (covered in the next entry). 01Despite sharing the Vado nameplate, Vado (90 Nm, ~26 kg, 710 Wh) and Vado SL (50 Nm, ~16 kg, 320 Wh) are fundamentally different bikes. Specialized markets the SL as 'amplifier' — adds to your effort — while the full-power Vado is 'I-still-pedal-but-it-feels-flat'.
02The Vado SL accepts a 160 Wh Range Extender that mounts in a standard bottle cage and plugs into the charge port — turning 320 Wh into 480 Wh in seconds. Full-power Vado does NOT accept this; its battery is fixed.
03Specialized Mission Control app's 'Smart Control' lets you tell the bike 'I want to ride 60 km' and the motor automatically modulates assist to ensure the battery makes the distance — a feature Bosch and Yamaha still don't match natively.
04MasterMind TCU is the small monochrome display recessed into the top tube — Specialized's answer to clean cockpits. No bar-mount computer needed; firmware runs on the TCU itself. Updated over Bluetooth via Mission Control.
05Specialized was one of the first major bike brands to launch a premium e-bike — the 2012 Turbo S, an early S-pedelec with 45 km/h max assist. The Vado is the spiritual successor scaled for the mainstream pedelec market.
06Specialized's full-power motors (1.2E / 2.0 / 2.2) are built by Brose Antriebstechnik in Berlin and tuned by Specialized — a deeper relationship than typical OEM, with custom firmware not available to other Brose customers.
07In the US, full-power Vado ships as Class 3 (28 mph / 45 km/h pedal-assist) by default, but can be switched to Class 1 (20 mph / 32 km/h) via Mission Control — useful where Class 3 is restricted from bike paths.
