Origin

The Rockhopper is one of the longest-running model names in mountain biking — it launched in 1989 as Specialized's first sub-$500 mountain bike, putting trail-capable hardware in the hands of riders who couldn't afford the Stumpjumper. Thirty-five years later it still occupies the same slot in the catalog: the bike a brand-new mountain biker is most likely to be sold by their local shop. The current generation features five frame sizes (XXS through XL) each engineered with size-specific tubing, fork travel (80/90/100mm), and wheel size (27.5" on small frames, 29" from M up) — a level of size-by-size engineering rare at this price point. Variants ladder from the base Rockhopper through Sport, Comp, Comp 29, and Elite, with the entire range sharing the same frame. It remains the entry point into the Specialized ecosystem for most riders and one of the best-selling hardtails in Europe.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Size-specific wheels (27.5" XS/S, 29" M-XL) — better fit for shorter riders than rivals
  • Internal cable routing — rare at the €600-900 price point
  • Ground Control 2Bliss tubeless-ready tires from the box
  • Modern 1× drivetrains across the whole range (up to Shimano Deore 12-speed on Elite)
  • Threaded BSA BB + all-standard formats — easy service at any shop
  • Rack/fender mounts enable winter/commuter conversion; lifetime frame warranty
  • Longest-running Specialized MTB nameplate — strong Baltic dealer support and used supply
Weaknesses
  • Giant Talon / Cube Aim often beat the equivalent trim on raw spec-per-euro
  • Base/Sort forks are basic SR Suntour coil (XCT/XCM) — limited on real trails
  • Not for XC racing (Chisel) or aggressive trail/enduro (Fuse)
  • QR axles and mechanical/entry-hydraulic brakes on lowest trims
  • No dropper routing on most trims (external workaround only)
