Origin

Ninebot, a Beijing self-balancing-vehicle startup, acquired the original Segway in 2015 and merged the two brands into Segway-Ninebot. The ES series of foldable kick-scooters, launched from 2018, was one of the products that carried the combined brand into the mainstream micromobility boom. The ES2 became a genuine icon of the era: it was the reference hardware for the first wave of shared-scooter fleets (Bird, Lime and others ran fleets built on ES-series chassis), which put the design in front of millions of riders worldwide. The ES4 is the flagship of that family - not a new platform but an ES2 sold together with a clip-on external battery pack that mounts on the stem, roughly doubling capacity and range. In effect the ES4 answered the single biggest complaint about the ES2 (short range) by bolting more Wh onto an already-proven scooter, which is why the two share almost every other spec.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Light and genuinely portable - one-step fold, easy to carry and store, good for mixed transit + scoot commutes
  • Extended range for its class thanks to the external battery (~45 km advertised, ~24-25 km realistic)
  • Low-maintenance and reliable: solid airless tyres (no punctures), sealed hub motor, mature app ecosystem
Weaknesses
  • Harsh ride - 8" solid tyres transmit road buzz and the dual suspension only partly compensates
  • Modest power: 300W motor is weak on hills and slow off the line, top speed only ~30 km/h
  • Real-world range falls well short of the advertised figure, and stem/battery bolts are known to loosen over time

Generations

  1. ES1 / ES2 (core platform, 2018)

    • Original ES foldables; short range is the main limitation.
  2. ES4 (flagship with external battery, 2018+)

    • Same chassis as ES2 plus a clip-on 187 Wh external battery on the stem - roughly double the range and a slightly higher top speed. The external pack is the entire difference.
