Scale Series

Origin
2008. The Scale was Scott's answer to pure XC hardtail racing. While the Spark handled full-suspension XC, the Scale served as the lightweight, no-rear-suspension weapon for marathon and XCM racing — and dominated the World Cup hardtail category for over a decade with Nino Schurter.

The verdict
+Strengths
- Exceptional climbing efficiency — unmatched power transfer for a full-suspension-priced hardtail
- Gen 3 geometry is genuinely modern: 67.9° HTA, long reach, steep STA — finally competitive on technical descents
- Adjustable headset (±0.6°) gives geometry flexibility without buying a new frame
- HMX-SL frame at 847g is among the lightest production XC hardtail frames ever made
- Huge lineup: RC SL TR to Scale 940 covers €1,299–€13,999 with consistent geometry
- Syncros integration (bar/stem/wheels) saves meaningful weight at top spec
- Service door and polymer bottle inserts show unusual attention to long-term serviceability for a race bike
−Weaknesses
- 100mm front travel remains limiting on increasingly technical XC courses (vs Cannondale Scalpel HT at 110mm+)
- No dropper post standard on most RC variants — this is a deliberate weight saving but a real-world comfort sacrifice
- Top-end pricing (€13,999 for RC SL TR) is described as 'comically stratospheric' even by enthusiast press
- Internal cable routing through headset complicates bearing swaps and geometry cup changes
- High BB (320mm) is a feature for pedal clearance but takes adjustment for riders from slacker bikes
- Alloy variants get 15mm longer chainstays (438mm) — slightly less nimble feel vs carbon (423mm)
