Nomad (Enduro)
Origin
The Santa Cruz Nomad debuted in 2005 as the brand's big-travel 'all-mountain' bruiser — a hydroformed aluminium frame with roughly 165mm of travel and the company's signature VPP (Virtual Pivot Point) dual-link suspension, which had been part of the Nomad's DNA from day one. It was conceived to be burly enough for big hits and bike-park days yet efficient enough to pedal all day, and it was an instant hit that helped define the emerging 'freeride meets trail' category. The first carbon Nomad arrived in 2010; the third generation in 2014 modernised the geometry and switched to 27.5" wheels. A pivotal 2017 redesign moved to a lower-link-driven shock, curing the old VPP 'hammock' mid-stroke wallow and delivering more consistent, tunable performance — the moment the Nomad earned its near-cult following. Since the V6 in 2023 the Nomad has become a dedicated mixed-wheel (mullet) bike with in-frame 'Glovebox' storage, and the current seventh generation (MY27) continues Santa Cruz's pattern of refinement over revolution.
Specifications
- Frame
- Carbon: two grades over the years — C (lighter, cheaper) and CC (lightest/highest-modulus). Current V7/MY27 is CC-only. Early gens (2005-2009) were aluminium.
- Weight
- kg
- Drivetrain
- 1x12 — SRAM (NX/GX/X0/X01 Eagle, incl. AXS wireless) or Shimano (Deore/XT, incl. XT Di2) depending on build and year
- Brakes
- 4-piston hydraulic disc, 200mm rotors — SRAM Code / MAVEN or Shimano depending on build/year
- Wheels
- Mixed / MX since V6 (29" front, 27.5" rear). V3-V5 were full 27.5". Boost 148x12 rear spacing. Reserve 30|HD carbon or RaceFace alloy depending on build.
The verdict
- Superb descending composure and traction from the 170mm VPP suspension — a genuine enduro/freeride benchmark
- Mixed-wheel handling (V6/V7): fast, confident 29" front with a lively, maneuverable 27.5" rear
- High-quality, quiet, well-detailed carbon frame with lifetime warranty, free bearings, and in-frame Glovebox storage
- Expensive — a premium price for the badge and CC carbon; complete builds run well into five figures of euros new
- Overkill for mellow trails: heavy, slack and descent-biased — a shorter-travel bike suits everyday XC/trail better
- Newer gens prioritise composure over the old bike's poppy playfulness; some builds have fiddly shock rebound access
