Bicycle BMX tubes adapted for the e-scooter form factor — 8.5" is a non-standard size in cycling but became a de-facto standard once Xiaomi M365 hit volume. No single design team — commodity product. Xiaomi spec'd Kenda/CST as OEM; aftermarket suppliers reverse-engineered fitment. 8.5 inches is the practical sweet spot for portable e-scooters: smaller than a 12" wheel (still too clunky to fold compactly), larger than the 6.5" hoverboard wheel (which rides terribly on real surfaces). 8.5" with a 2.0" tire section gives just enough rubber to absorb cobblestone shock without making the scooter too heavy or expensive.

Rear wheel of M365 is a multi-hour DIY job to disassemble (motor cable, brake disc, hub bolt) — many riders take it to a shop, adding €10-20 labour to a €5 tube
Anti-puncture tubes add 80-130g per wheel — small range reduction (~2-3%) and slightly heavier ride feel
Slime sealant dries out in ~2 years even without punctures — must replace tube on schedule, not just on failure
Slime does not seal cuts >3mm, sidewall damage, or pinch flats (snake bites that punch two holes simultaneously)

01The 8.5" scooter tube did not exist as a meaningful SKU before 2017 — Xiaomi M365 essentially created the category. Today it is the highest-volume inner tube size in European urban micromobility, outselling all bicycle sizes combined in the under-€15 segment.
02Slime sealant inside a tube is mostly water + propylene glycol + ammonia + fibrous particulates (chopped rubber, sometimes ground crab shell or similar). It seals punctures up to ~3mm by drying around the hole edge under air pressure. Above 3mm or on sidewall cuts it fails because there is no surface for the slurry to build up against.
03A typical Tallinn or Riga rider on a stock M365 gets their first puncture within 200-500km of urban riding — typically from cobblestone pinch flats, tram rail edges, or construction-zone debris. This is shorter than equivalent bicycle tubes because scooter tires are smaller, run at lower air volume, and the rider sits further back over the rear wheel concentrating load.
04Schrader valves on scooter tubes can be inflated at any gas station with a free air pump — a huge practical advantage in winter when you don't want to pump by hand on the street. Presta valves require an adapter that most gas stations don't have. This is one practical reason Xiaomi chose Schrader despite Presta being lighter.
05Anti-puncture tubes are sometimes confused with 'solid' (airless) tubes — they are NOT the same. Anti-puncture is still pneumatic (air-filled, thicker rubber). Solid tubes are dense foam, give a brutally harsh ride, and damage scooter bearings/decks over time. URBALT does not recommend solid tubes for any Baltic rider.
06The bent-valve (90 degree) Schrader option is a significant quality-of-life upgrade: with the wheel mounted, the straight valve disappears behind the hub flange and is awkward to reach with a pump nozzle. The 90-degree valve sits flush against the rim and accepts any pump head easily.
