Origin

The 2023 One-Forty shares its exact front and rear carbon triangles with the enduro-focused One-Sixty. The difference in travel is achieved entirely by using a shorter stroke shock and a shorter fork. Merida pioneered the 80-degree seat angle, bringing the rider far forward to make climbing effortless despite the slack head angle. Gen 4 (2023-present): Total redesign introducing the 'FAST' kinematic, Agilometer sizing, steep 80-degree seat angle, and hidden tool storage.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Exceptional climber — the steep 80° seat angle plus efficient, pedal-bob-resistant suspension put the rider in an upright, powerful position
  • Strong value: award-winning carbon frame and quality spec for the money
  • Versatile and configurable — flip-chip enables 29" or mullet (27.5" rear) setup, and the 30–230 mm adjustable Team TR dropper fits any leg length
  • Playful yet stable descender thanks to long reach, slack 65° head angle and huge dropper
  • Practical touches — internal frame storage compartment and a forgiving, smooth ride character
Weaknesses
  • Heavy for the price/material — ~14–15.85 kg even in carbon builds, well above featherweight rivals
  • Headset cable routing makes servicing a pain and is widely disliked
  • Rear suspension can feel firm and lacks plushness versus competitors
  • Maxxis Dissector rear tyre reaches its limits in wet, loose conditions
  • Low front end and weight distribution can cause hand fatigue; the 80° seat angle feels awkward on flat ground
