Origin

The WideWheel began life as a Mercane Indiegogo campaign in January 2018, dreamed up by a Korean engineering team who wanted a scooter that traded skinny commuter tyres for fat, car-like rubber. The campaign blew past its funding goals, prototypes were built, and mass production started at a factory in China, with fluidfreeride becoming the exclusive US distributor. The original 2018/2019 WideWheel earned a cult following for its unmistakable wide-tyre stance and go-kart feel, but early units also drew criticism for build quality and metal fatigue around the neck and stem. In January 2020 Mercane answered with the WideWheel Pro: same DNA, but with re-moulded neck/fork/stem parts in tougher alloy, a bigger 720Wh battery, an upgraded controller and LCD, dual modes and an added rear disc brake. It became one of the defining 'affordable dual-motor' scooters of its era and is still sold today in lightly updated form.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Strong dual-motor acceleration and confident hill-climbing for its price class
  • Distinctive, stable, carve-happy ride on smooth pavement thanks to the ultra-wide tyres
  • Puncture-proof solid tyres and a solid, low-wobble frame (on the improved Pro)
Weaknesses
  • Firm, jittery ride on cobbles/gravel/broken pavement - solid tyres and stiff suspension punish rough surfaces
  • Heavy at ~25 kg with limited steering agility, so not a great carry-up-stairs commuter
  • Cable disc brakes need frequent readjustment; early WideWheel had a brake recall and build-quality history to check
