Origin

Marin Bikes was founded in 1986 in Marin County, California — the birthplace of mountain biking — and has long named its models after local places (Kentfield, Fairfax, Novato, Nicasio). The company moved into the former Grateful Dead building in Novato in 2004 and built its reputation on approachable, well-sorted aluminium bikes. The Kentfield sits at the entry point of Marin's urban/hybrid range: it carries Marin's off-road DNA (a stout steel 'Moto Blade' fork, disc brakes, wide tyres) into a comfort-first commuter aimed at people getting back on a bike or riding to work and around town. It has been offered continuously since around 2020 in numbered 1/2 trims with step-through (ST) versions, evolving mainly in drivetrain choice rather than frame design.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Very comfortable, upright, confidence-inspiring ride — easy for newcomers and casual commuters
  • Practical and rugged: disc brakes, wide multi-surface tyres, full rack/fender/kickstand mounts, 1x simplicity
  • Strong value; low maintenance with a durable steel fork and forgiving wide-range gearing
Weaknesses
  • Mechanical (cable) disc brakes need occasional adjustment and lack hydraulic feel/power
  • Fairly heavy and not built for speed — no suspension, basic wheels/components
  • Wide handlebars and relaxed geometry feel unfamiliar to riders used to sportier bikes

Generations

  1. Kentfield 1

    • Entry trim — simplest and cheapest; 7 gears are plenty for flat city riding.
    Brakes
    Tektro MDM280 mechanical disc
  2. Kentfield 2

    • Top trim — the 11-48T cassette gives a much wider gear range for hills/loads; worth the step up if the terrain isn't flat.
    Brakes
    Tektro MDM280 mechanical disc
