Keo Classic
Origin
LOOK Cycle is a French company founded in 1951 in Nevers by Jean Beyl, an engineer who had already invented modern ski-binding technology. In 1984 LOOK applied that release-mechanism expertise to cycling and produced the PP65 — the first-ever clipless road pedal — which reached the world stage when Bernard Hinault's La Vie Claire team rode them to victory in the 1985 Tour de France, changing road cycling forever. LOOK launched the Keo pedal family in 2004 with a lighter, lower-profile cleat that replaced the older Delta system. The Keo Classic sits at the bottom of that hierarchy as the affordable, comfort-oriented entry point — a simplified, composite-bodied version of LOOK's higher-end Keo 2 Max pedals. It has run through several generations, with the Keo Classic 3 (and Classic 3 Plus) being the current form.

The verdict
- Excellent value — genuine LOOK Keo performance and cleat compatibility at an entry-level price
- Wide 400 mm2 / 60 mm platform with low stack height gives stable, efficient power transfer
- Easy, forgiving engagement plus adjustable tension and three float options make it a great first clipless pedal
- Bearings are not user-serviceable; some testers report axle play developing after a few hundred km on the plain Classic 3 (the Plus's steel plates address wear, not this)
- Composite body of the standard Classic 3 is less durable/stiff than the metal-plated Plus or higher Keo tiers
- Single-sided entry has a learning curve for absolute beginners versus double-sided systems
Generations
Keo Classic / Classic 2 (2004-2015 era)
- Early generations; curved body, narrower center. Fine but superseded — buy only if very cheap.
Keo Classic 3 (2019+)
- Current base model. Bigger, more stable platform; best value new.
Keo Classic 3 Plus (2019+)
- Current upgrade tier. Steel plates add durability and stiffness for ~10 g and a small price bump — the smart buy for regular use.
