Origin

The Penny Lane has been KTM's practical urban/trekking hardtail since around 2010 — a bike that sits at the intersection of trail-capable hardtail and everyday city commuter. The Street variant's factory-fitted lights, fenders, rack and kickstand is a characteristically Austrian approach: a mountain bike frame made practical for daily use. Named after a street, the Penny Lane keeps commuters moving over cobblestones, cycle paths and light trails alike.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Street variant is a true all-in-one commuter — no accessories to add
  • Hydraulic disc brakes at this price point deliver reliable wet-weather stopping power
  • Schwalbe Smart Sam tires handle tarmac, gravel paths and light trails equally well
Weaknesses
  • 3×9 Shimano Altus drivetrain is dated — chain-drop risk on rough trails
  • 14.5 kg is heavy for a commuter — carrying it upstairs is noticeable
  • QR axle standard throughout — lacks the rigidity of modern thru-axle setups
