Origin

The Kona Sutra launched in 2008 as the brand's purpose-built touring and adventure bike — a direct descendant of Kona's mountain bike heritage applied to long-distance riding. It occupies a niche where mountain bike toughness meets road distance: chromoly steel, low-rider fork mounts, extensive rack/fender compatibility, and an increasingly gravel-capable geometry as bikepacking grew in popularity. The LTD variant pushes further into bikepacking territory with a 1x drivetrain and knobbier rubber.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Exceptional luggage carrying capacity — low-rider + rear rack + multiple cage mounts + frame bag compatibility
  • Cromoly steel is tough, repairable anywhere in the world, and has a compliant, comfortable ride
  • Wide tire clearance (up to 29x2.25" LTD) makes it capable on rough gravel and even light trails
Weaknesses
  • Heavier than modern carbon or titanium touring options
  • Relaxed geometry is stable loaded but feels sluggish when riding light
  • The standard 2x10 drivetrain is serviceable but not cutting-edge for loaded mountain passes
