Origin

Launched in 2021, the G3-X was Colnago’s first dedicated gravel bike, built by adapting the V-Series monocoque carbon platform from the V3Rs road racer. Instead of starting from scratch, Colnago stretched the chainstays by 20 mm, added 42 mm tire clearance, and recalibrated the geometry for loose terrain while keeping the frame as stiff and race-focused as their flagship road bikes. Nathan Haas campaigned five custom builds in its debut season.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Race-bike stiffness on gravel: V3Rs platform delivers explosive acceleration and precise handling
  • Light for the category: complete bike under 9 kg with quality build
  • Versatile tire sizing: 700c×42 mm or 650b, tubeless-ready out of the box
Weaknesses
  • Stiffness comes at a comfort cost — not a smooth-riding adventure bike
  • Original stock wheels (Shimano RS370) are heavy relative to the premium frame price
  • Race geometry demands good baseline fitness; not beginner-friendly
