Origin

Colnago is one of cycling's most storied names: founded by Ernesto Colnago in Cambiago near Milan in 1954, the marque built its reputation on hand-crafted steel race frames, the iconic ace-of-clubs badge, and decades of professional victories from Eddy Merckx's hour-record bike onward. The E64 Disc, unveiled in 2019, marked Colnago's deliberate, late entry into the e-road category. Rather than chase a powerful, obviously electric machine, Colnago chose the featherweight MAHLE ebikemotion X35 system and wrapped it in a frame styled to look almost identical to its flagship C64 road bike, even down to paint that mimics lugged tube-to-tube construction. The name is a nod to that heritage and to the brand's 65th anniversary. The goal was a bike that respected the classic Colnago road identity while offering a subtle tailwind for older riders, recovering athletes, or anyone wanting to keep pace on the club run.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Exceptionally light and discreet for an e-bike (~12 kg), rides like a normal road bike when off the assist
  • Genuine Colnago frame quality, C64-derived carbon fork and geometry, premium Ultegra build
  • Natural, seamless low-power assist that smooths the pace on flats and rolling terrain
Weaknesses
  • Low torque (40 Nm) and modest 250 Wh battery — the X35 runs short of grunt on steep (10%+) climbs and range is limited
  • MAHLE/ebikemotion X35 has a documented reputation for battery degradation and fiddly, dealer-only in-frame battery replacement
  • Premium price for the power delivered; you pay largely for the Colnago name and low weight rather than e-bike capability

Generations

  1. E64 Ultegra mechanical (2019-2021)

    • Entry build; simplest and cheapest to service, mechanical shifting means no shift-battery to manage.
  2. E64 Ultegra Di2 (2019-2023)

    • Premium build with electronic shifting; the version most commonly found and most desirable used. Motor/battery unchanged across the run.
