Ultimate CF
Origin
The Ultimate is Canyon's longest-running carbon race bike, unveiled at Eurobike in 2004 as the brand's first carbon road frame. The second generation in 2007 introduced an asymmetric seat tube and Canyon Engineered Parts components; Australian Baden Cooke had taken the original to victory at the 2007 Tour Down Under, and Cadel Evans famously soloed to the 2009 World Championships in Mendrisio on a second-gen Ultimate. Across five generations the platform has consistently won at the highest level — three Grand Tour titles and two World Championships per Canyon's own marketing, with the current platform built around a 780 g CFR frame using Toray T1100/T800 + M40X fibre. The 2026 generation is positioned as the climbing-first all-rounder in Canyon's road line: lighter and more comfortable than the Aeroad, faster than the Endurace. Most CF SLX and CFR builds ship with integrated power meters and ceramic hybrid bearings as standard.
Specifications
- Frame
- Monocoque carbon, 5th-generation Ultimate. Three layups: CF (~1,110 g), CF SLX (~846 g in size M, per BikeRadar test of the 2023+ frame), CFR (780 g, Toray T1100 + T800 with M40X fibre). Fork ~295 g, 15% stiffer than the previous generation with reinforced bottom-bracket area; clearance up to 32-33 mm tyres
- Weight
- kg
- Drivetrain
- Shimano 105 mechanical or 105 Di2 / Ultegra Di2 R8100 / Dura-Ace Di2, or SRAM Rival AXS / Force AXS / RED AXS. CF SLX 8 Di2 build: Ultegra Di2 R8100 2x12, 52/36T crank with 4iiii power meter, 11-34T cassette. Integrated dual-sided power meter standard on most CF SLX and CFR builds
- Brakes
- Hydraulic disc, flat-mount. Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8100 (CF SLX 8 Di2) or matching tier per build; rotors typically 140 mm front/rear on the lightweight builds
- Wheels
- DT Swiss ARC 1400 Dicut, 50 mm deep carbon, 20 mm internal / 27 mm external rim width (CF SLX 8 Di2 build); other builds vary by spec tier
The verdict
- Exceptional value — CF SLX builds deliver near-CFR handling and stiffness at a markedly lower direct-to-consumer price
- Genuine all-rounder: light enough to climb, sharpened 5th-gen geometry that matches the Aeroad at key points, and ~10 W more aero than the previous generation at 45 km/h
- CF SLX layup is slightly heavier than CFR but rides more comfortably and is no slower overall
- High-end spec for the money — DT Swiss ARC 1400 carbon wheels, integrated/dual-sided power meters and ceramic hybrid bearings standard on upper builds
- Proven WorldTour pedigree (3 Grand Tour titles, 2 World Championships per Canyon)
- Stretched, low, aggressive race position does not suit every body type — less relaxed than the Endurace
- Direct-to-consumer only: no way to customise components at point of purchase, and you must assemble/size the bike yourself
- Front 25c / rear 28c asymmetric tyre spec divides reviewers — many prefer 28c front and rear
- CF SLX frame is marginally heavier than the CFR, so it feels a touch less responsive on the steepest climbs
- Less compliant / more road buzz than plusher rivals like the Merida Scultura; tyre clearance caps at ~32-33 mm, limiting rough-road use
