Origin

Canyon, the German direct-to-consumer brand from Koblenz, launched the flat-bar Roadlite in the mid-2010s as a fitness-oriented alternative for riders who wanted road-bike speed without drop handlebars. The name itself has heritage: 'Roadlite' first appeared on Canyon's lightweight drop-bar road bikes (the rim-brake AL 6.0/7.0 era around 2014, praised as a sub-£1000 bargain with full Shimano groupsets and Mavic wheels), before Canyon repurposed it for the flat-bar fitness family. In 2017-2018 the line went carbon with the Roadlite CF, a sub-1kg frame that borrowed technology from Canyon's Ultimate and Endurace road bikes -- internal routing, flat-mount disc brakes with 12mm thru-axles, a one-piece carbon cockpit and a VCLS split seatpost for comfort. In 2022 Canyon redesigned the aluminium version to match the carbon bike's look and geometry and brought both to more markets, settling into today's numbered trim ladder (Roadlite 4/5/6/7, CF 8/9). Because Canyon sells direct with no dealer margin, the Roadlite has always undercut comparable shop-bought fitness bikes on component-for-the-money.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Genuinely light for a flat-bar bike (carbon ~8.5 kg, some builds ~7.6 kg) so it accelerates like a road bike
  • Road-bike DNA: 700c wheels, ~30mm fast tyres and real road groupsets make it quick and efficient
  • Strong value from Canyon's direct-sales model -- more groupset and frame for the money than shop rivals
Weaknesses
  • Aluminium trims can feel firm/harsh on rough roads; comfort is the main compromise vs plusher hybrids
  • Direct-to-consumer means self-assembly and no local dealer -- warranty/service is by post, a real factor in the Baltics
  • Limited tyre clearance (~30-35mm) and lightweight build make it a fitness/road bike, not a rugged gravel or load-hauling commuter
