Origin

The BMC Timemachine series, specifically designed for time trials and triathlons, emerged as a flagship model in the early 2010s, with the TM01 iteration being particularly notable around 2011. It was conceived to offer elite athletes a distinct aerodynamic advantage, integrating BMC's 'SubA' (Sub-Aero) concept to minimize drag. The bike quickly established itself in the high-performance segment, known for its extreme adjustability, allowing riders to fine-tune their position for either UCI-compliant time trial regulations or more aggressive triathlon setups. Over the years, the Timemachine has undergone significant evolution, with the latest generations, such as the Timemachine 01 DISC, incorporating disc brakes, advanced integration of cables and components, and clever storage solutions tailored for long-distance triathlon events. It remains a cornerstone of BMC's racing lineup, continuously pushing the boundaries of aerodynamic efficiency and rider fit.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Genuinely fast aero platform: SubA truncated airfoil tubing and integrated cockpit cut drag while staying stable in crosswinds
  • Class-leading fit adjustability via P2P system and dual V-Cockpit / Flat-Cockpit options — covers UCI-legal TT and aggressive long-course tri positions
  • Triathlon-practical integration: removable rear storage box, top-tube fuel-box mounts and dual downtube bottle options, all removable for UCI compliance
  • Restrained, clean aesthetic that avoids excessive fairings while keeping aero performance
  • Travel-friendly: disassemblable cockpit and hidden seat clamp
Weaknesses
  • Heavy for the price — complete disc build is around 7.95 kg, undercutting some rivals
  • Cockpit/stem-bar setup shows a surprising level of flex under hard efforts
  • Firm ride and deliberately slow, stable handling make it less fun and twitch-free off the aero bars
  • Limited tire clearance (up to 27 mm on disc), narrow by modern standards
  • Very high price and, for several model years, frame-kit-only availability (frameset ~€5,500, complete builds up to ~€11,000)
