Origin

The non-electric Helix was Bergamont's everyday-trekking workhorse from the mid-2010s through the early 2020s, sitting one step below the sportier Vitess and one step above the city Sponsor. The 'Tour' tag, and the numbered trims Helix 4, 5, 6 and 7, all referred to the same 28-inch aluminium trekking platform — full mudguards, rear rack, integrated lights, ergonomic Ergon grips, suspension fork with lockout — sold as a do-everything bike for daily commuting plus light multi-day touring on Baltic / Nordic asphalt and packed gravel. Helix 7 was the top non-electric trim and retailed around €999. From 2024 onward Bergamont effectively retired the unassisted Helix and re-used the name for its new Bosch SX e-trekking platform (see E-Helix entry), so the non-electric Helix Tour is now a used-market bike. There is still active aftermarket support because the platform shares mounts and geometry with the new e-Helix frame.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Excellent value — Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, air/coil suspension fork with lockout and full trekking equipment (mudguards, rack, lights) at a sub-€1000 price point.
  • Comfortable, stable upright geometry and Schwalbe Smart Sam tires make it confidence-inspiring and versatile on both tarmac and packed gravel.
  • Quality finishing kit on the top trim — Ergon GA30 grips and SFC30 saddle plus Syncros cockpit improve comfort over typical budget hybrids.
  • 63 mm Suntour fork is well-damped, doesn't bottom out harshly, and takes the edge off rough surfaces without harsh jolts to the arms.
  • Wide gearing options across trims (1×12 SRAM Eagle 11-50T on Helix 7, 2×9 Shimano on Helix 6) suit loaded touring and hilly commutes.
Weaknesses
  • On the way out — Bergamont retired the non-electric Helix; the name was reused for a 2024+ slopestyle/dirt MTB and a Bosch e-trekking platform, so it is now a used-market-only bike with confusing model overlap.
  • Heavy for a fitness/hybrid — ~13.9 kg (Helix 7) up to ~15.8 kg (fully-equipped Helix 6 EQ), notably above the hybrid average.
  • The suspension fork adds dead weight and offers limited benefit, especially on lower trims where the budget coil unit is not very effective.
  • Stock entry-level platform pedals give poor grip in the wet and are unsuitable for any off-road use.
  • Component spec varies widely by trim and model year (3×9 → 2×9 → 1×12), making used-market shopping and parts-matching confusing.
