Origin

2021. The Cargoville represented Bergamont's entry into the fast-growing e-cargo segment — a major strategic move for the brand. More than 2 years of development preceded the launch. The LJ70 (Long John) was the flagship debut: a well-engineered front-loader with bamboo deck, Bosch Cargo Line motor, Enviolo CVT gears, and Magura brakes, positioned as a premium family/professional cargo solution. The Bakery was the smaller urban companion.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Bosch Cargo Line CX (75Nm) on LJ Expert — develops full power at low cadence, ideal for loaded hill starts
  • Enviolo CVT on LJ — stepless shifting under load or while stopped. Best drivetrain choice for heavy cargo use.
  • 725Wh on LT Expert — 'haul all day without constant recharging' (opticycles). Largest battery in class.
  • Dual battery option (1125Wh total) on LJ — exceptional range for professional daily use
  • Modular bamboo loading area — eco-friendly, strong, upgradeable
  • LJ battery in steering dome — clever weight distribution, keeps centre of gravity low
  • 26" wheels on LT — 'rides like a normal eBike despite its size' (ebike24)
  • Hard EPP lockable cover (2024) — closes security gap of fabric tarpaulin
  • Thule Yepp compatibility — family-tested child seat standard
  • B&M lighting on LJ — best-in-class German LED lighting brand
Weaknesses
  • LT Expert at 37.2kg, LJ at ~45kg — cannot be lifted upstairs. Ground-floor storage essential.
  • Battery non-trivially removable on LJ (in steering dome) — not as simple as pulling a downtube PowerTube
  • LJ at €5,399+ is premium pricing — not accessible to casual buyers
  • LT Edition (63Nm Performance Line) weaker on steep starts under full load
  • Limited English-language reviews — less press visibility than Riese & Müller, Urban Arrow competitors
  • Long tail (LT) less capable than true LJ for heavy front-loaded transport
  • Bakery limited to 15kg front / 25kg rear — not for heavy loads
