Quip

Origin

The Quip was designed as a radical rethink of the Dutch city bike — instead of bolting carriers onto a conventional frame, the carriers are structurally integrated into the seat tube via a split-tube design. Launched around 2015, it won the prestigious GIO Industrial Design Award 2015 (with a Special Award for Originality) and the Dutch National Bicycle Test 2016, making it one of the most recognised Dutch city bikes of the mid-2010s. The concept later grew into the Quip Extra Cargo platform for heavier transport use.

The verdict

+Strengths
  • Integrated carrier frame eliminates rattle and creates a uniquely sleek, cohesive design aesthetic
  • Narrow front carrier allows the Quip to fit into the tightest Dutch bike-rack slots
  • Award-winning ride quality validated by Dutch National Bicycle Test — competent, stable city commuter
Weaknesses
  • Only 3 gears standard — very limited on hilly terrain or for faster riders
  • At ~21 kg the Quip is heavy despite being a non-electric model
  • Battery-powered lights (not hub dynamo) require charging management
